Since her time as a schoolgirl Ferrera has had a keen interest in the acting world. She was a stage performer in various school productions, and her first film "Real Women have Curves," which made her famous. Even though her appearance in the tv series "Ugly Betty" was more well-known in the media, her performance as the lead character on the show garnered her acclaim. The show won the Golden Globe Award for Best actress as well as the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Primetime Emmy Award. Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis has praised her for being an "role-model" for young Hispanic women in the entertainment world. Ferrera was a participant on Time magazine's list of 100 influential individuals across the globe in 2007, was named one. Ferrera is an advocate for and an avid patron of the Save the Children campaign. In India she was involved in volunteer work, she got to meet the children of sexual worker to spread awareness of sexual trafficking.
